Volunteer Schedules
Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers are also needed for specific projects (i.e., sorting clothing, shopping for food) that can be done at other times.
Description of Services
Cathedral Emergency Assistance offers in-kind goods (clothing, food, and personal items) and financial assistance (rent, utilities, transportation, medical prescriptions, identification/legal documents) to low-income persons in the downtown area.
List of Needs for Cathedral Emergency Assistance
For first time consumers, we require official identification and relative documentation of need:
*ACCEPTED PROOF OF INCOME: Examples include paystubs from companies with yellow page listings, awards letters from government agencies, or typed letters from employers on the employer's letterhead. The employer must also have a yellow page listing."
Utility assistance: *proof of income and a bill (e.g. MGE, KCPL, phone)
Rent assistance: *proof of income, lease, and notice of overdue rent or eviction notice. The landlord must be a corporation, not a private individual.
Greyhound bus ticket: documentation of need to travel such as employment with a company that has a yellow page listing, family death, family medical emergency in the destination city. Any person with 90% of the bus fare will be eligible for a 10% discount.
One-ride bus fare card: documentation of need such as a job interview with a company that has a yellow page listing, medical appointment, service appointment at government or non-profit agency
Gasoline voucher: valid driver's license and proof of ownership of the vehicle. Driver and owner must be the same person.
Missouri identification: Please come to the office during office hours to see Paul for details.
Birth certificate: photo identification
Prescriptions: Please come to the office during office hours to see Paul for details. We cannot pay for controlled substances, painkillers or psychiatric medication.
Amount of Services Rendered
For over twenty years, the Cathedral has provided emergency assistance to those needing food, clothing or financial help. From July 2000 through June 2001, the Emergency Assistance program served 965 persons with $35,067, including $17,871 in rent, utilities, transportation, medicine, documentation and other financial needs.
